Care Instructions - Amaryllis
Planting Depth: Plant with the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil
Germination Period: Bulbs typically sprout in 7-10 weeks after planting
Bloom Time: 6-8 weeks after sprouting
Hardiness Zones: Grown as houseplants in most regions, hardy in zones 8-10
Plant the bulb in a well-draining potting mix, with the top 1/3 exposed. Water sparingly until growth appears, then increase watering to keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Place in a warm, sunny location. Once the flower stalk emerges, turn the pot regularly to prevent leaning.
After blooming, remove the spent flowers but leave the stalk intact. Continue providing bright light and water regularly to allow the leaves to replenish the bulb. Feed every 2-3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer. In late summer, stop watering to induce dormancy. Cut off dead leaves and store the bulb dry at 50-60°F for 8-10 weeks. Or simply avoid watering, although be advised if there are worms in your soil they will eat the bulb to survive the lack of water.
To rebloom, repot the bulb in fresh soil, water thoroughly, and return it to a warm, sunny spot. With proper annual dormancy, amaryllis bulbs will rebloom for many years. Larger bulbs produce more flower stalks, so avoid cutting into the bulb when removing old roots and repotting.
