Care Instructions - Calendula

Calendula thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and 12 inches apart after danger of frost has passed. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination. Thin seedlings to 18-24 inches apart once they are 2-4 inches tall.

These low-maintenance plants require little care beyond removing spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to partially dry between waterings. Calendula performs best in cool temperatures and may go dormant in extreme summer heat.

Calendula readily self-sows if allowed to set seed. For a constant supply of bright orange/yellow blooms, make successive sowings every 2-3 weeks during the growing season. Deadhead regularly to remove spent flowers and prevent self-sowing if desired.

Calendula has culinary uses, with the edible petals adding color and flavor to salads and other dishes. The flowers also produce a valuable oil used in skincare products. Simply shear off faded blooms to harvest, taking care not to damage the stems and leaves.
